I. “Staff Picks”- Favorite Books from the Staff Team
- Matt’s Pick- True Story (James Choung)-“This book changed my life. I always knew there was more to the gospel than the one I had learned growing up. I knew that Jesus had to be good news for more than just the afterlife. If you want to learn those things as well, and even learn how to share it in a simple diagram, read this book! It is not only a very easy-to-read fictional book, we will most likely practice using this diagram next year so it will give you a headstart. And obviously….the author is Korean!
- Sarah Lin’s Pick- American Born Chinese (Gene Yang)- I am recommending American Born Chinese, a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang- a CCF alumnus! If the two shiny award stickers on the cover are not enough to convince you that this is one great read, allow me to share why I enjoyed it so thoroughly. Whether you are an American- born Chinese or not, this book explores ethnicity, the minority experience, identity, and even racism and stereotypes. While these topics are generally rather weighty, Yang presents them through a fresh, creative, and poignant perspective, allowing the reader to insert their own story into the stories of the characters. American Born Chinese helped me to pause and reflect on my own ethnic identity experience, and helped me to articulate many things I felt but never knew how to express. I’m sure you’ll find it to be similarly delightful and helpful!
- Sarah Lam’s Pick- You are Special (Max Lucado) – “I grew up with this great book! The Wemmicks in this story are so much like college students today- constantly evaluating and comparing accomplishments and appearances. This book reminds me of the gospel that assures my identity in Christ. I appreciate the insights about sanctification, faith, and unconditional acceptance. Also, it has pictures!”
- Erina Kim’s Pick- From Brokenness to Community (Jean Vanier)- “I first discovered this book while experiencing community with a group of young women coming out of prostitution in the slums of Manila. The author shares what he learned about community by living among physically and mentally disabled adults. Reading it completely transformed my view of community, and made me realize how much we have cheapened our understanding of community. To this day, it’s the best book on community I’ve ever read. And it’s only 52 pages!”
- Sara Fong’s Pick- A Transforming Vision: Multiethnic Fellowship in College and in the Church (Paul Sorrentino)
II. Suggested Reading
- Sabbath Keeping (Lynn Baab)- An introductory work on the Biblical basis for Sabbath and practical ways to keep it. A great follow-up for what we learned at Chapter Camp about the importance of Sabbath.
- Strengthening the Soul of Leadership (Ruth Haley Barton) A very powerful and relevant book for those who have experience in ministry and have struggled with burnout. Each chapter is based off a particular part of the leadership journey of Moses.
- The Good and Beautiful God (James Bryan Smith)- An introductory overview of some basic spiritual disciplines and how they shape the narratives we believe about God. There are 9 chapters, each with a particular practice of “Soul Training” that is encouraged at the end of it. This book is best read in community.
